Interesting range of information. Both sides are well covered.

I am one of the women who opted for bioidentical hormones. I know that had I followed what my OB/GYN recommended that I would be a wreck. He wanted to put me on the pill, yet I am estrogen dominant. That just didn't make sense and what did make sense for me was to use something from the earth.

Perhaps people may not trust because of the research but the research isn't being done because drug companies can't make money off it. The synthetic drugs also have to be processed by the liver, bioidenticals are easier on the liver.

My doc never recommended I get my adrenals tested or recommend supplements for that to avoid the hot flashes. My doc also never recommended an estrogen detox for all the estrogen hanging around in my liver.

I have a more personal and trusted relationship with my compounding pharmacy who demands nothing but the highest and most natural products in his compounding.

Had I not done all this for myself, I would most likely been prescribed some sort of antidepressant because that is where I would have gone.
I'm not looking to be young forever, I just want to live and have energy.

Exposure to oestrogen over long periods of time, can increase you chances of cancer. Women who menstruate at a young age, or have a later menopause are at greater risk. Some forms of HRT are thought to do this too and increase your risks.

I take progesterone on prescription in the form of Cerezette, normally prescribed as a contraceptive, as well as Tamoxifen ( oestrogen hormone therapy designed to suppress cancer cell growth) . I can tell you that both these have quite pronounced effects on my female cycles, and how I feel! I haven't much choice in it though, because otherwise I should have steered well clear of these types of drugs. I am not convinced our search for the fountain of eternal youth is a healthy option.

There's a lot of talk about phyto-oestrogens being beneficial, and they are readily available in many common foods, like Soya.

Hmmm this reads like it might become a Tess Gerritson novel about how it all can go horribly wrong.
Not sure that I am convinced though you have written a well balanced piece Jane. Interesting though.
